Ian ‘Mac’ MacLagan…such sad news…

Ian ‘Mac’ MacLagan…forever R & R …I’ve just found out about Ian MacLagan passing away on the 3rd Dec…to say I’m gobsmacked and sad is a fuckin’ understatement!!!

On the 1st July this year at the little Kings Heath pub venue of the Hare & Hounds in Birmingham I saw him and met him and couldn’t believe that this glorious rock n roller and member of two of the greatest ever bands that these shores have ever given birth to, was there on a small stage in front of me playing some old Small Faces / Faces classics and regaling us with some great stories of his career in music…I was a blessed member of his audience…and the cream on the cake was to meet him after the show and have a chat with him…especially about Ronnie Lane…here’s what I wrote about the night – published on my web site the day after https://www.gojo-music.co.uk/meeting-ian-mac-mclagan/

My old mate Bloss told me the news this afternoon…I didnt know…he thought i would because of me being a massive fan of the Small Faces / Faces etc…he thought I knew…

I’ve just been looking on-line at the tributes…

Ian…to meet you was an absolute pleasure, I was fortunate enough to meet Steve Marriott a couple of times back in the 80s at the old JBs venue in Dudley, and Ronnie Lanes influence on me as a songwriter is in every note I write and sing…this has been such sad news…

As for seeing and meeting you on 1st July 2014 at The Hare & Hounds in Kings Heath, Birmingham…to quote an old Faces classic…’I was glad to come, but I was oh so sad to go’…if there is a heaven you must already be rehearsing up songs for a tour with Steve and Ronnie…God Bless you Mac…when words fail music speaks X

None Of The Above…get our democracy back.

Dear Friends,
Firstly, thank you again for signing the NOTA UK petition ‘UK Elections: Include ‘None of the Above’ on all ballot papers’:
https://you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/inclusion-of-an-official-none-of-the-above-option-for-all-uk-elections-2
We have some news…
Parliamentary Committee recognises NOTA as a possible reform (and wants YOUR views on it!)
Ok, this is pretty big. You may recall that we submitted evidence earlier this year to the parliamentary Political & Constitutional Reform Committee looking into voter engagement. They recently published a set of proposed possible changes to the electoral system which, thanks to our lobbying, included ‘None of the above’ – but only, unfortunately, in the context of possibly introducing compulsory voting.
Now, they are launching a survey to gauge the public’s views on their proposals. Thanks to further lobbying from us, it includes this question:
“6. Should “None of the above” be an option on the ballot paper?”

This is significant, to say the least, as it is the first time, to our knowledge, that NOTA has ever been seriously discussed and put forward by a parliamentary committee as a possible reform in and of itself, regardless of whether voting is made compulsory or not.

Here’s the Committee’s press release.http://www.parliament.uk/business/committees/committees-a-z/commons-select/political-and-constitutional-reform-committee/news/voting-arrangements-survey/
And here is the survey. http://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/voter-reform
You know what to do!
Let’s seize this opportunity with both hands and make the call for real NOTA ‘with teeth’ absolutely overwhelming.
If you need further inspiration, here’s my additional comment on question 6:
“Should “None of the above” be an option on the ballot paper?
Absolutely, without a shadow of a doubt. But it must be implemented properly i.e.: with formalised consequences for the result if the majority choose it. This kind of NOTA ‘with teeth’ is the only way to formally withhold consent at an election, something you must be able to do in a true democracy, consent being central to the concept of democracy itself. Having this option would level the playing field considerably and put more power in the hands of voters, almost certainly leading to further desirable democratic reform further down the line. Although it remains a travesty that this has not happened before, given how important NOTA is, I welcome the fact that this is FINALLY being discussed seriously. Well done everybody!”

ONWARDS & UPWARDS!

Thanks…

Thanks to everyone at The Lighthouse last night – another decent turnout for the gig and screening on The Spirit of 45…very good considering it clashed with the football…but what’s that got to do with the working class anymore…so well done to everyone who came along and got their priorities right.

Well that’s it for live appearances for 2014 – thanks to everyone that’s been along and supported them…dates for 2015 will be added ASAP

Gary O’Dea & The Spirit of 45

Tuesday 18th November @ The Lighthouse Media Centre Wolverhampton…Black Country Echoes presents
6pm Gary O’Dea – live solo acoustic in the bar followed by a special screening of Ken Loach’s The Spirit of 45 http://light-house.co.uk/calendar/2013/03/the-spirit-of-45/ one of the most inspiring and important documentary films ever made. The film includes interviews with people on how the spirit of unity which buoyed Britain during the war years, carried through to create a version of a fairer and more united society in the immediate years after the war ended.
Gary comments ‘I saw it on it’s release at the Lighthouse in April 2013…it was just as Thatcher had died ironically… it was like a chat with my old grandad bless him. When I came out the cinema a guy said “bit of a socialist dream”…I replied “well you’ve now woke up and back in a capitalist nightmare”!
I so want this nation to please wake up and rebuild a Socialist LEFT, built on the principles and values of what Ken Loach highlights in this film…we need to (pardon the pun) look forward by thinking back and we need to protect it from all and any that seek to infiltrate it and damage it, a healthy honest pragmatic and strong one for the common man / woman…there’s more of us than any other’s. I’m thrilled to be taking part in this evenings events. Wake Up…the witch is dead…we now have to take on her ‘bastard son’s and daughters’!
